Material Lab

The laboratory is used to test and analyse materials in teaching, research, and project work. The laboratory has, among other things, equipment for mechanical testing (tensile test, hardness test, impact strength), sample preparation, optical microscopes, SEM, DSC, TGA and infrared spectroscopy.

Laboratory Safety and Rules of Conduct

Laboratory Safety:

  • For potentially dangerous experiments, the laboratory administrator must be contacted for a safety review.

  • All personal injuries must be reported in writing to the laboratory administrator.

  • Work that generates dust or fumes must be carried out in fume hoods.

  • Chemicals that are to be used in Materials Lab must be approved by the laboratory administrator before they are put into use.

  • Obtain appropriate training and approvals before using any equipment.

  • Ask the staff if you are in doubt about anything.

Rules of conduct: 

  • If you break something, take it easy. Let the staff know so that we can repair or replace it. Inform the staff of any malfunctions.

  • Tools and materials must always remain in Materials Lab.

  • If you use any equipment, you take responsibility for its condition and the associated work area.

  • Clean up after yourself.

  • Food and drink are not allowed in Materials Lab.

Access and admission requirements

To gain access to the laboratory, students must complete an introductory course on equipment use.

If you are a staff member interested in using the laboratory, please contact the laboratory administrator.

Opening Hours:

The laboratory can only be accessed by students or others who have been granted specific permission. 

It is open all hours for those with access.
