The Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering was established on 1 January 2021 at Faculty of Technical Sciences at Aarhus University simultaneously with three other engineering departments.
Since then, we have attracted talented researchers from all over the world, and we have built a modern academic organization that allows us to work across disciplines. But we also
also stand on a longer history and a rich educational tradition dating back to 1964, when a mechanical engineering programme was set up in Aarhus.
At that time, Denmark was enjoying a booming economy with increasing international trade, and the new programme was established to match companies' need for mechanical engineering solutions for more efficient production.
Since then, mechanical engineering in Aarhus has evolved in line with industrial changes, and it is still renowned for its strong degree of collaboration with both small companies and large enterprises.
In 2008, we established the master of science programme in mechanical engineering, and in 2012 the then Aarhus School of Engineering with all its bachelor of engineering programmes merged with Aarhus University and moved to Navitas at the habour front in Aarhus.
In 2022, the Department of Mechanical and Production Engineering started a major relocation from Navitas to Katrinebjerg, and today we are working to develop the campus of the future at Aarhus University to ensure a modern educational environment and excellent experimental facilities in numerous fields extending beyond the traditional boundaries of a single department.
