Profile

I am Clinical Associate Professor at Aarhus University and Consultant in Infectious Diseases with responsibility for research at Gødstrup Regional Hospital. My research is clinical and translational, with a focus on microbiome–immune interactions, infections in immunocompromised patients, HIV and post-COVID condition. I also work with the development of clinical research and research environments across medical specialties.

Research

My research focuses on clinical and translational questions in infectious diseases. A central theme is the interaction between the microbiome and the immune system, including how this may contribute to persistent symptoms and immunological changes. I also work with infections in immunocompromised patients, HIV and post-COVID condition through clinical cohorts, interventional studies and registry-based projects.

Teaching activities

I teach medical students and physicians in infectious diseases and clinical research. I supervise PhD students and early-career researchers, with an emphasis on linking clinical questions to research methodology and critical appraisal of the literature. I also contribute to journal clubs and research-oriented teaching.

Collaborations

I collaborate with clinical and translational research environments at Aarhus University, Aarhus University Hospital and Gødstrup Regional Hospital, as well as with national research networks and industry partners. The collaborations include microbiome and immunological analyses, clinical cohorts, registry studies and multicentre studies, often across medical specialties.

Consultancy

I provide research-based advice within infectious diseases, including HIV, infections in immunocompromised patients and clinical research. I participate in the Danish HIV Cohort Study (DANHIV), the Danish Database for Hepatitis B and C (DANHEP) and the national PrEP collaboration (DANPrEP), as well as working groups on HIV comorbidity, and contribute to clinical recommendations and research priorities.

Job responsibilities

My primary area of responsibility is clinical research in infectious diseases. I develop and conduct investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored studies and lead the Clinical Research Unit for Infectious Diseases. As consultant responsible for research, I also work with research strategy, development of new projects and strengthening research collaborations across the Department of Internal Medicine.
