As a Professor in MoIecular and Cellular Physiology, I conduct research in the area of Alzheimer’s disease. I am interested in understanding why metabolic disorders are a major risk factor for neurodegeneration and how we can repurpose metabolically active drugs for treatment of age-related dementia. I have a PhD in Cell Biology and experience in conducting research in academia and biotech in the USA, Germany, and Denmark. My main responsibilities are mentoring of research activities, carried out by PhD students, postdocs, and assistant professors. Jointly with national and international collaborators, we study risk genes causative of both metabolic disorders and Alzheimer’s disease, aiming to provide explanatory models for metabolic dysfunctions as major cause of neurodegeneration. We elucidate risk gene functions in stem cell -erived models of the human brain and we validate the clinical relevance of our findings in studies involving patients.
