Profile

I am a biomedical scientist, Associate Professor at the Department of Biomedicine, and founder and CEO of NMD Pharma. I have conducted research in skeletal muscle physiology at Aarhus University, the University of Cambridge, and La Trobe University. My research led to a new therapeutic concept targeting the muscle ClC-1 ion channel and the development of medicines for neuromuscular diseases. I aim to connect basic research, education, innovation, and clinical development for the benefit of patients and society.

Research

Muscles enable us to walk, use our hands, speak, and breathe. Movement begins with electrical signals in the brain that travel through nerves and are transmitted to the muscles. My research investigates how this communication fails in myasthenia gravis, Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease, spinal muscular atrophy, ALS, and myotonia. We combine physiology, computational modelling, and drug development to create innovative treatments that improve muscle function and quality of life.

Teaching activities

Since 2007, I have taught physiology to medical students. My teaching includes lectures, tutorials, practical exercises, interpretation of experimental data, and written and oral examinations. I emphasise active, research-based learning in which students critically engage with real data. I also share my experience of innovation and of translating research ideas into solutions that can create value for patients and society.

Job responsibilities

At Aarhus University, I teach physiology across a broad range of topics. My experimental research examines how electrical signals and ion channels control skeletal muscle function, fatigue, and communication with the nervous system. The work includes electrophysiological measurements, fluorescence microscopy, and studies of active muscle fibres. As founder and CEO of NMD Pharma, I translate research discoveries into new medicines for neuromuscular diseases.
