Profile

Majid Ali (M’12–SM’22) received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering in 2013 and the M.Sc. degree in Electric Power and Energy Engineering in 2016 from the University of Management and Technology (UMT), Lahore, Pakistan, under fully funded scholarships. He was awarded Gold and Bronze Medals in Electrical Technology by the Punjab Board of Technical Education (PBTE), Lahore, Pakistan, in recognition of his academic excellence. He completed his Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with specialization in Electric Power Systems and Microgrids at the Center for Research on Microgrids (CROM), Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University, Denmark, during 2022–2025. His doctoral studies were fully funded by the Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF) Chief Minister Merit Scholarship Scheme and Aalborg University.

His Ph.D. research focused on resilient planning, optimal operation, and energy management of islanded microgrids for sustainable and reliable power systems. His work developed advanced optimization-based methodologies for enhancing microgrid resilience, integrating renewable energy resources, and improving energy system operation under uncertainty and extreme events. His doctoral research was recognized with the Young Researcher Award in the Ph.D. Poster Competition at Energiens Folkemøde 2024 and 2025, receiving two awards of DKK 10,000 each. During his doctoral studies, he was also elected as a Member of the Aalborg University Ph.D. Committee (2024–2025), contributing to doctoral researcher representation and academic governance.

From 2013 to 2021, he held academic and research positions at several institutions in Pakistan, including SCET–UET Lahore, ICBS, UCET–University of Sargodha, IEE&CE–University of the Punjab, and the University of Lahore. His responsibilities included teaching, curriculum development, laboratory management, undergraduate and postgraduate supervision, academic program coordination, research activities, and industry collaboration. He has more than 13 years of combined experience in academia, research, and engineering consultancy in the fields of electric power systems and energy technologies.

He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Energy Technology Section, at Aarhus University, Denmark, where he contributes to Horizon Europe-funded projects, including AEP and RePower. His current research focuses on advanced energy management systems, optimization, and dynamic modelling of resilient and sustainable energy systems with high renewable energy penetration. Previously, he served as a Postdoctoral Researcher (Guest) at CROM, Aalborg University, working on the Agency for Resilience (ActRes) project, where he investigated resilient microgrid operation, optimization-based control strategies, and climate-resilient energy infrastructures.

His research interests include power system planning and operation, renewable energy integration, smart grids, microgrid planning and control, distributed energy resources, energy management systems, demand response, power system resilience and reliability, stochastic optimization, and artificial intelligence applications in modern power systems. He has expertise in advanced simulation and optimization tools, including MATLAB/Simulink, GAMS, HOMER Pro/Grid, XENDEE, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, and Python.

Dr. Ali is a Senior Member of IEEE and actively contributes to IEEE technical activities, including participation in the IEEE Smart Grid Operations Committee. He is also a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the International Association of Engineers (IAENG), and the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC). His research aims to develop intelligent, resilient, and sustainable energy solutions to support the transition toward future carbon-neutral power systems.

Teaching activities

His teaching philosophy is grounded in enabling students to connect theoretical foundations with practical, real-world engineering challenges through problem-based learning (PBL) and outcome-based education (OBE). As a power systems engineer and researcher, he views teaching as a collaborative process in which students actively participate as co-creators of knowledge. He emphasizes inquiry-driven learning, hands-on laboratory work, simulation-based analysis, and real-world case studies to foster critical thinking, innovation, and technical competence in electrical engineering students.

He brings over 10 years of teaching experience at undergraduate and graduate levels across multiple academic institutions. His teaching portfolio includes core courses in Power Systems, Renewable Energy Systems, Power Electronics, and Energy Management, along with active involvement in student mentoring, final-year project supervision, and curriculum development.

Over the course of his academic career, he has worked closely with multiple academic and professional platforms, including SCET–UET, ICBS, UCET–UOS, IEEE-PU, IEE&CE–PU, and EED–UOL, contributing to both teaching excellence and industry-orientated engineering education.
