I am a qualified dentist and hold a PhD in dental biofilm research. My academic interests focus on the interactions between dental biofilms, oral microorganisms, and caries development. As an Associate Professor, I conduct research and teach in cariology, focusing on biological processes in dental biofilms and their significance for oral health. I am also engaged in the development of dental education and, as Head of Studies, contribute to the quality assurance and strategic development of the Dentistry Programme.
My research focuses on the microbiological and structural aspects of natural dental biofilm formation and the role of biofilms in caries development. Using advanced molecular biological and microscopic methods, I investigate microbial communities and pH landscapes in intact dental biofilms in situ and in vivo in 3D. The aim is to achieve a better understanding of the biological mechanisms underlying oral health and caries. In addition, I am engaged in dental education research.
I am course coordinator for the courses Holistic Treatment Planning 1 and 2. I teach undergraduate and graduate dental students in cariology, diagnostics, disease control, and treatment planning, and supervise Bachelor's and Master's research projects.
I also contribute to the development of curricula, educational activities, and teaching materials, with a focus on research-based dental education.
My primary responsibility as an Associate Professor at the Section for Oral Ecology, Department of Dentistry and Oral Health, is teaching dental students in cariology, diagnostics, disease control, and treatment planning. In addition, I serve as Head of Studies for the Dentistry Programme, am a member of the Board of Studies, and act as deputy chair of the Board of Studies. I also provide professional advice and guidance to dental professionals on caries diagnosis and caries control.
