My primary competence is within design against metal fatigue, including neighboring disciplines such as structural analysis and dynamics/load analysis. In relation to fatigue, I've worked with welded joints in steel, ductile cast iron, cast steel, bolted joints and most recently 3D printed metals - aluminium, stainless and titanium. My research interests cover both the understanding of the fatigue phenomenon in metals, e.g. through experimental work, but also design against fatigue using codes/guidelines as in practise. I'm very interested in the possibilities and challenges offered by the finite element method - in particular how it is used together with codes where material strength is typically given in terms of nominal stress. I also have competences within (numerical) fracture mechanics and simulation of crack propagation in a fatigue context.
