Material Instabilities

ABOUT THE RESEARCH GROUP

The group develops theoretical and numerical methods to mathematically model the behaviour of materials under load. The methods can be applied on traditional materials in order to increase the reliability of life time calculations, durability, behaviour under extreme loads and failure mechanisms.

These improved mathematical tools is also used to optimise designs by enhancing specific features of shape, and to reduce material usage.

The tools can lead to predictions of new materials having tailored micro structures that improve mechanical, optical, thermal or electrical properties. In particular, fracture mechanics can be used to understand and improve interfaces between different materials.

Keywords in our research include continuum mechanics, fracture mechanics, solid mechanics and constitutive models.
